When habits become orthodontic problems

Comfort habits are completely normal in toddlers. But when vigorous thumb or finger sucking persists as the adult teeth arrive, the constant pressure can push front teeth forward, hold back jaw growth and create an open bite, a gap between the top and bottom front teeth that makes biting and some speech sounds difficult. Tongue-thrust swallowing can do the same.

How a habit-breaker helps

A habit-breaker is a small, smooth appliance, fixed or removable, that sits behind the upper front teeth. It doesn't punish; it simply removes the satisfying suction or resting spot, which quietly dissolves the habit, usually within a few months. Fitted with encouragement (and a reward chart), most children barely look back.

Kind, not punitive

We involve the child from the start: what the appliance is, why it helps, and how quickly they'll forget it's there. Combined with praise-based strategies at home, success rates are excellent, and any bite changes already underway can then correct or be treated early.

Unsure whether the habit has already affected the bite? An early orthodontic assessment answers it in one visit.
